Mathias Staack, a pioneer contractor and builder of Winona, died at 7 A. M. today at his home, 522 East Fifth street at the age of 91 years. Death followed a few weeks illness and was not unexpected. The nonagenarian came to Winona to live in 1856. Deceased is survived by his wife; nine children, Emma wife of Louis H. Thurow, Sophia wife of H. F. Gerlicher, Clara wife of Fred J. Welty, Richard, all of Winona; Edward, of Boville, Idaho; Mrs. Matilda Lindow of Eureka, California; Albert and Otto of Iron Dale, Wash., and Carl of St. Paul; twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Two sons, Gustaf and William are deceased.Born in Germany.
Mr Staack was born in the northern part of Germany, June 16, 1826, and came to America as a young man. After landing in New Orleans, he came up the river to Davenport, where he had a friend, arriving in that city in the summer of 1852. There he spent three years. Then he went to Comanche, in the same state, and there on December 5, 1855, he married Mary Peterson, who was born July 26, 1836. In 1856 he was persuaded by E. A. Gertzen to come to Winona. For a time he lived with Mr. Gertzen and then erected at 522 East Fifth street, the cozy little house in which he has since made his home. For ten years he engaged in the grocery business at the corner of Third and Kansas streets. This business was not however, greatly to his liking, and he disposed of his store and started work on the North Western, then in the course of construction between this place and Rochester. Then he went into the general building and contracting business. In 1904 he retired. He has been prominently identified with the Odd Fellows, and is one of the oldest members of that order in the city. He is also a member of the Druids. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. J. J. Hillmer officiating. The Odd Fellows will have charge of the services at the grave at Woodlawn cemetery.
