Misc. Notes
From "The Gerlicher Story and Affiliated Families" by Miriam G. Hayden, 1972
"ANNA GERLICHER ADAMS STODDARD was born September 21, 1858 in Winona,
Minnesota, about a year after her family moved there from Cleveland.
She was the second child of Susan and Andrew Gerlicher.
When the family moved to the farm in Wilson Township, Anna was about
four years old. She attended the country school, and later high school
and Normal in Winona. She attended the Methodist Church.
In 1887 she married ALBONIS BENA ADAMS, Barney as John Gage called him.
Barney was in charge of the Northwestern Railway Shops and for a time
Albert Gerlicher served under him. Later he was transferred to Mankato,
for Sophie Sartwell LaLonde supplied the following,
'When I was about eight years old (1901) Aunt Anna came to the farm
and asked my Mother if she could take me home for a week or two. She
always called me 'Sophie Girl'. I dare say Mother felt willing, as
plans were made for me to travel to far away Mankato, Minnesota!
'I was thrilled of course. It was late Easter time. It must have
been a two or three weeks' visit as I went to school while there. Being
in the 3rd Grade and in the 'City' was quite a change from country
school one mile from home.
'It seems I was her favorite and naturally I was petted and catered
to plenty, all very nice but I did miss my parents.
'Barney must have been sent to Fort Worth, Texas, for when the Jack
Gerlichers were visiting Auntie Susan Gerlicher in 1907 they were told
of Anna and Barney living in Fort Worth.'
Sophie LaLonde added, 'Uncle Barney was wonderful, but in 1913 or 1914
he met his death. He just stepped out of a streetcar and was hit by a
car and died right there.'
It is not quite clear how Anna met Guy Stoddard, married him and went to
Twin Falls, Idaho, to live. Some of the families lost track of her;
however, she and her brother Albert came from the West just before Susan
(Oech) Gerlicher died and were at the home when she passed and of course
were there for the funeral in 1927. In later years when Anna became ill
she went to live with her daughter and Albert noted in his Bible,
'Sister Anna's funeral January 10, 1943.'
FRANCES ANNA THOMPSON the daughter of Anna and Barney Adams was born
November 29, 1888 and attended school in Winona and Mankato. Later her
address was 122 Lanipo Drive, Kailua, Lanika, Oahu, Hawaii. Sometimes
later it was changed in care of her daughter and all the families
recommend writing to JOYCE THOMPSON ALLEN, but she does not answer any
letters. She was born 8/10/1910 possibly in Winona.
After becoming Mrs. Allen she moved to Albert Lea. Sophie Giles wrote
from the Walker Methodist Home in Minneapolis that Joyce visited her
quite often. According to Mildred Templeton, Sophia's desk was willed
to Joyce and Frances her mother so the old German Bible with the family
records, which Sophia had kept so carefully may have gone with the
case. Harold and his son Dr. Robert Gerlicher had some of Sophia's
books but the Bible was not among them."
